October this year will see the follow up to last year’s hugely successful Made In Roath Arts Festival. The festival will be taking place on 15th-17th October 2010, in various locations around Roath, Cardiff.

A community-based project promising an exciting and eclectic mix of exhibitions, residencies, workshops, performances and more, Made in Roath aims to give local people the opportunity to view, enjoy and celebrate local arts.

Made in Roath is open to everyone from professional artists to those trying out a new hobby. We are now gathering ideas and recruiting volunteers to get involved in this year’s festival. If you’re interested in showing work, helping out and/or just feel you might have something special to offer please contact madeinroath@gmail.com

The Big Draw…
of Roath Park

Saturday 16th October, 10am – 4pm (drop-in)

Taking Roath Park and recreation grounds as a platform for these inspirational drawing workshops, four local artists (Polly Aplin, Edel Cronin, Lauren Foulkes and Emily Stevens) bring you a varied approach to drawing and making marks. Grasp the opportunity to get involved in reinventing junk mail, drawing with sound and learning digital drawing skills. A rich display of local artists work and a plethora of inspirational history, imagery and text will accompany the workshops. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials to work with.

Creative Writing
with Shelagh Weeks and Liz Porter

Writer Shelagh Weeks and Liz Porter (Cardiff University) will be running a creative writing workshop (beginners welcome) in the library. Using the park as stimulus, writers will be encourages to conjure evocations of the park/s and draw on memory.

Snapshot Roath is an exciting 24 hour digital photography challenge where YOU provide the pictures for a film of Roath that will be screened on Sunday evening at The Gate. It’s the same as Snapshot Roath 2009, but with new features so the film will be put together in a new way and come out quite differently…but you’ll have to join in to find out how!

CAN DO School Mural
with People Around Here

CAN DO is an initiative from Roath-based community arts charity People Around Here to ‘paint it positive’ across the schools, subways, parks and council estates of Cardiff. This is an intergenerational initiative, mobilising everyone to work together to recreate their living environment through murals and other creative activities. As part of the Made in Roath festival, People Around Here will be designing a mural for the playground of Roath Park Primary School. Everyone is welcome to come along and help paint the mural, whatever your age or ability. All equipment will be provided but please come wearing old clothes for painting.

Hot Textiles

The shibori technique of manipulating fabric through heat dates back to the 8th Century. During this workshop participants will learn about the history of Shibori, as well as its contmporary uses, then put them to the technique into practise. Participants are welcome to bring along any synthetic materials they wish. Alongside this, learn other hot textiles processes, including how to transform plastic bags into contemporary textile art. Bring as many carrier bags as you can along with you!

The Ukulele Invitation
